UV Light Systems – Frequently Asked Questions (Miami, FL)
Is UV light safe for children and pets?
Yes. When a UV-C light system is professionally installed inside a central HVAC system, the germicidal effect is contained within the air handler and ductwork. The UV light is not exposed to occupied living areas, making it safe for children and pets. The only organisms affected are airborne microbes that pass through the HVAC system.

Is it safe to look at a UV light?
No. Never look directly at a UV-C light when it is operating. Exposure to UV-C light can cause eye irritation similar to a severe sunburn. Always turn off power and disconnect the unit before performing any inspection or maintenance.
Why does the UV light stay on even when the air system is not running?
Mold, bacteria, and other biological contaminants can grow inside the air handler even when the HVAC system is not actively running. Continuous UV-C operation helps prevent microbial growth on internal surfaces, keeping the system cleaner and supporting healthier indoor air quality.
Can I upgrade my Blue-Tube UV system with a different lamp?
Yes. Blue-Tube® and Fresh-Aire UV® AHU lamps are interchangeable. When it’s time to replace your UV lamp, you can choose from multiple options depending on your needs, including:
- 1-Year Lamp
- 2-Year Lamp
- 1-Year Odor Control Lamp
- 2-Year Odor Control Lamp
My “1-Year” UV lamp still glows after two years. Do I need to replace it?
Yes. While the lamp may still emit visible light, the effective UV-C output decreases over time. The “1-Year” and “2-Year” designations refer to effective germicidal performance, not how long the lamp will physically stay illuminated. Replacing the lamp on schedule ensures proper UV effectiveness.
Will a UV light system kill mold inside walls or insulation?
No. UV-C germicidal systems are effective only on surfaces directly exposed to the light or microorganisms that pass through the HVAC airflow. UV light cannot penetrate walls, insulation, or hidden building materials. For mold inside walls, additional remediation methods are required.
