Do I need a new central air conditioning system?
If your current system needs frequent repairs, struggles to maintain a comfortable temperature or has high operating costs, a professional evaluation can help you decide whether repair or replacement makes sense.
PRT Cool Service, Inc. can help you compare replacement options for your property and budget. Financing options may be available, subject to approval and applicable terms. Contact us for details.
Are some air conditioners built better than others?
Air conditioning systems vary in construction, compressor technology, efficiency, noise levels and warranty coverage. Compare the features of the specific models being offered rather than choosing by brand alone.
Proper sizing, installation and maintenance also affect performance and reliability. Our team can explain the available options and recommend equipment suited to your property.
Which air conditioners are energy efficient?
For current central air conditioning equipment, look for the SEER2 rating, which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2. A higher SEER2 rating indicates greater seasonal cooling efficiency when comparing systems using the same rating method.
SEER2 uses an updated testing procedure, so older SEER ratings should not be compared directly with SEER2 ratings. Review the efficiency rating for the complete matched indoor and outdoor system.
Actual energy use depends on factors such as equipment sizing, installation, ductwork, insulation, thermostat settings and maintenance. We can help you compare equipment costs and potential operating costs without promising a specific amount of savings.
How can I be sure my unit is the right size?
A system that is too small may struggle to cool your property. A system that is too large may turn on and off too frequently and provide poor humidity control.
A professional load calculation considers factors such as floor area, insulation, windows, sun exposure, local climate and the building's construction. Equipment should be selected using those requirements, rather than floor area alone.
Cooling capacity is commonly expressed in Btu/h or refrigeration tons. One ton of cooling capacity equals 12,000 Btu/h.
What do good central air conditioning systems have in common?
A well-selected system provides appropriate cooling capacity, good humidity control and suitable energy efficiency for the property. Noise levels, warranty coverage and access for maintenance are also worth comparing.
Correct installation, compatible components, adequate airflow and regular maintenance help the system perform as intended.
My A/C system isn't cooling very well. Should I replace it?
Poor cooling does not automatically mean the system needs to be replaced. Restricted airflow, a dirty filter, thermostat problems or other faults may require maintenance or repair.
A technician can inspect the equipment and explain the cause. When deciding between repair and replacement, consider the system's condition, age, repair history, warranty coverage, repair cost and expected operating costs.
